Not a care!

"Not a care", Watercolour, (15" x 11")

This is another of my older paintings. I do not thing the green shadow looks convincing.
Anyways, the subject is so interesting that i felt it still deserves to be posted here. This "old man" can be seen anywhere and everywhere in India. There is of course the ubiquitious "beedi", the only thing he relishes in this whole wide world. At times he likes to give some unwanted advice to people whom he doesnt know. He has no role to play in the scheme of things, except that things would somehow look so incomplete without him. India wont be the same without his dirty dhoti and smelly kurta.
All comments, suggestions and critiques are most welcome.

Nice one..
And the green shadow does not look unconvincing. In fact you could have made it multicolor by adding some blue/orange/red or any other pure color while maintaining the correct value. It would have looked even more interesting.. To me at least. :)

I think you captured the essence of the man nicely :)

the painting is just great! the shadows are natural. It looks like there were two lights! It gives a different look...

Hi Vinayak. Great expression and pose captured. Somehow the green tones and the shadow seem a bit odd at first, but keeping in mind the limited palette used...thinkits okay...perhaps a touch of orange along with the greens? Just thinking aloud...

It's fantastic Vinayak. As far as I'm concerned the shadow looks perfect. I think placement, proportion and value are more important than the actual color of a cast shadow. And I kinda like that green look, it suits him.

You do really awesome figures, you know that? Each one tells such a great story.

Very interesting, Vinayak. The shadow is very smooth..I don't find anything wrong here.Only the man's hand is not as clearly visible as it should ve been, against the white beard. The figure is perfect ,otherwise, and very beautiful rendering.

Just a reminder, we are waiting for your post on AOI...why don't you post any of your old work from this blog? Would love to see it there!:)

Thank you everyone.
Prabal,Sandeep: the colour of the wall was actually light fgreen so I thought dark green would go well in the shadows.

Thanks Meera.

Sparrowhawk: The second shadow is not because of a seond light source, its actually the shadow of a person sitting besides him, that I did not care to paint. :)

Thank you Crystal. Hope to learn a lot from your work.

Thanks Arti. Yes, I should have manipulated the contrast in the hand to make it clearer. But then, there is always a next time! ;-)
